Podocarpus is a very versatile shrub or tree, depending on what type of plant you are looking for. This plant is evergreen and tolerates many conditions, including disease and pest pressure. The scientific name is Podocarpus macrophyllus, and it is known by these common names: Japanese yew or yew-pine. It can reach 30-40 feet tall and spread 20-25 feet wide. I like this plant because it grows slowly, so its size can be managed. This is an excellent replacement for other evergreen screen plants, such as Leyland cypress and Japanese cryptomeria, that struggle more in south Alabama.
