Alabama Extension’s Grow More, Give More program continues to make a profound impact on communities across the state by promoting home gardening and food donation. Launched in response to rising food insecurity and a growing interest in home gardening, this initiative empowers individuals to grow their own produce and share surplus harvests with those in need.

The program connects gardeners of all experience levels with resources to help them cultivate productive gardens. Through online guides, educational workshops, and one-on-one support from Alabama Extension agents and Extension Master Gardener volunteers, Grow More, Give More ensures participants have the knowledge and tools to succeed. Beyond enhancing food security, the program strengthens community ties by encouraging gardeners to donate their extra produce to local food banks, shelters, and charitable organizations.

The success of Grow More, Give More is reflected in its impressive numbers. In 2023, Alabama gardeners donated 32,157 pounds of fresh produce, significantly improving access to nutritious food for many families. Additionally, 15,440 vegetable and herb transplants were donated, helping families grow their own food. Gardeners from 66 zip codes across Alabama participated, along with 5,360 families. Similar impacts were achieved in 2024.

Beyond food donations, Grow More, Give More played a crucial role in expanding gardening knowledge. The program hosted numerous research-based educational events, reaching a broad audience and equipping them with essential skills in sustainable gardening, pest management, and soil health. Through these workshops, Alabama Extension provided valuable training that helped gardeners maximize their yields and contribute more effectively to their communities.

The success of Grow More, Give More highlights the power of gardening as a force for good. By fostering a culture of giving, the program not only reduces food waste but also provides a meaningful solution to hunger. The dedication of participating gardeners ensures that fresh, locally grown food reaches those who need it most, reinforcing the importance of community-driven efforts in addressing food insecurity.

As the program continues to expand, Alabama Extension remains committed to broadening its reach, providing more resources, and encouraging greater participation. Whether you are an experienced gardener or just starting out, Grow More, Give More offers an opportunity to make a lasting impact.
